Understanding Kenya’s CBC/CBE
Transition: Grade 9 to Grade 10
1. Overview of CBC/CBE in Kenya
- CBC (Competency-Based Curriculum) emphasizes mastery of skills, values, and attitudes over rote learning.
- CBE (Competency-Based Education) operationalizes CBC by aligning learning outcomes with real-world competencies.
- Learners progress through Early Years, Middle School, Junior Secondary (Grades 7–9), and Senior Secondary (Grades 10–12).
2. Transition Framework: Grade 9 to Grade 10
- Assessment-Based Placement:
- 60%: Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) – summative exam at end of Grade 9.
- 20%: School-Based Assessments (SBAs) from Grades 7 & 8.
- 20%: Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).
- Pathway Selection:
- Learners choose from three career pathways:
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
- Arts & Sports Science
- Social Sciences
- School Selection:
- Each learner selects 12 schools:
- 7 for first-choice pathway
- 3 for second-choice
- 2 for third-choice
- Includes 9 boarding schools and 3 day schools across counties.
3. Role of Digital Systems
- KEMIS (Kenya Education Management Information System) ensures transparency and automation.
- Learners access admission letters online via Ministry of Education portals.
- Placement considers:
- Merit (KJSEA scores)
- Learner preferences
- Regional equity and diversity quotas.
4. Special Provisions
- Top Performers: Priority placement in preferred boarding schools.
- Learners with Special Needs: Tailored placements based on achievement levels.
- Quota System: Limits number of learners from same JSS in one boarding school to promote diversity.
5. Senior School Curriculum
- Core Subjects (mandatory for all pathways):
- English
- Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language
- Physical Education
- Community Service Learning
- Electives vary by pathway and subject combinations selected via the Grade 10 Selection System.
